The group begins the short climb up the hill

and continues climbing

Almost there

The educational part of the trip

Opening the gate

Waiting for the gate

If you look carefully, certain people don't need keys to get in

View of Wheeler Peak from the cave

Larry in one of the many domes-the geology of the cave is somewhat interesting. Like interconnected bubbles in Swiss Cheese

Bats have been here

It is interesting to see what gets highlighted in a long exposure picture

Formations in the cave

Packrat nest at almost the middle of the cave

More of the beautiful packrat nest

Slowly moving the group through

More cave formations

Damaged stalactites

Large hanging drapery, stalactites

intricate crystals

They can be found, but you have to hunt in the corners

More of Larry

People passing each other in the narrow spot

Looking down at Jim in the final large room

Lights reflecting off the vapors from people breathing

There is airflow at the back of the cave, but it dissappears into a small hole in the ceiling

Don't Fall Larry!

This was once a beautiful drapery, it has since been broken and written on. When will people ever learn to protect our natural resources?

More crystals

Tiny little things

More of Larry and the swiss cheese

Looking at the natural wonders

like a little forest

The very back corners of the cave

Interesting patterns created by water flowing in the hidden corners

Larry under the large drapery hole

Can you tell I was moving through the cave with Larry?

Smith Canyon Cave--you can see it for miles

Welcome to Baker, NV. A town so big even the Sinclair is based out of a tough-shed.

Old Man's cave is a relatively easy jaunt. Once the tricky gate is opened, it is almost entirely walking passageway. There are several side passages that can be briefly explored. Some crawling is required there, and a couple narrow vertical passages are difficult, but easily bypassed.(sometimes not even noticed) There is one area that would provide a tricky climb, but wooden ladders have been placed so that it is a simple matter to go down and back up the other side.

The cave is obviously "breathing." When you get to the back of the cave you can feel a distinct breeze. If you climb up near the ceiling you can find the hole the breeze comes in through. It is far to narrow for a person to go through, but one is forced to assume that for a packrat this cave could become a through trip.
